Your device's settings

There is no separate accessibility widget on this site. The settings on your phone, tablet or computer reach every page directly, so you set them once and they work everywhere, not only here.

  • Larger text: use your browser's zoom (the aA menu in Safari on iPhone, the zoom control or Ctrl/Cmd and + on a computer) or the text-size setting in Chrome on Android. This site scales with it.
  • Higher contrast: turn on "Increase contrast" on iPhone or Mac, or a high-contrast theme on Android or Windows. Your browser applies it to this site the same as it does everywhere else.
  • Less motion: turn on "Reduce motion" and animation on this site stops, including the moving background on the home page. There are two exceptions, both of which keep scrolling: the strip of publication logos on the home page, and the announcement bar at the top of each page. Hovering either one or touching it pauses it.

What we have built into the site

We have aimed this website at the principles of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We do not hold a formal accessibility certification or audit, but we have designed and tested toward these goals:

  • If your device asks for reduced motion, the site honours it automatically, apart from two scrolling elements: the logo strip on the home page and the announcement bar at the top of each page. Both pause when you hover over or touch them.
  • The layout adapts to phones, tablets and desktops, so nothing is cut off or trapped off-screen.
  • Every image carries its real dimensions, so the page does not jump around as it loads.
  • Meaningful photographs carry alternative text; decorative images are marked so they do not add noise.
  • Proper headings and page landmarks so screen readers can move through content in a sensible order.
